The MIIAA is the vehicle by which the medical indemnity industry, can work collaboratively to meet the needs of the medical profession, the community and government.
Four of the five Australian medical indemnity insurers formed the national association to:
- Inform and influence the national dialogue, debate and policy setting on matters relating to the systems of medical risk management and compensation for medical harm.
- Represent the voice of all insured doctors in such debates and policy setting.
- Enhance the reputation of the member organisations as major contributors to the well being of the profession and the community.
- Collaborate on the negotiation and implementation of government policy, legislation and regulation.
On 27 September 2005 it incorporated in NSW. This was an important step for the medical indemnity industry.
The MIIAA seeks to be acknowledged as the voice of the medical indemnity industry and the key voice of all insured doctors. The MIIAA exists to influence the direction and outcome of policy reviews on medical indemnity issues to ensure that the interests of doctors are protected.
The Board has established a number of committees,with the most active committee being the Risk Management Standing Committee.
The work of the committees is vital to the success of MIIAA establishing itself as the pre-eminent advisor on medical indemnity issues.
MIIAA has a unique capability to understand and shape the medical indemnity landscape. MIIAA has access to unique data, has the capacity to analyse it and produce reliable information which can be directed toward solving problems and reducing clinical risk which will guide the future of medical indemnity in Australia. No other organisation has this capability. The MIIAA will be leading debate on issues such as indemnity models, system reform and risk management.
A key component of the mission of MIIAA is to collaborate with other key stakeholders.
The MIIAA will influence decision making. It will lobby on its members behalf and will enhance its communications strategy to ensure that all stakeholders and well informed.
The MIAA is the voice of the medical indemnity industry, and will expand recognition of its unique knowledge in forthcoming months.
